Salsa Mama was "born" in 2009 at the Kaw Valley Relay for Life in Bonner Springs, KS. Those cutie pies above are my oldest son and hubby doing some BBQ catering. Love the memories! Our team--Leavey's Legacy---needed fundraising ideas to raise mucho dinero for cancer research. Using my dad's "famous" salsa recipe as a base, I tweaked the spice blend, added loads of fresh cilantro, and shouted to the rooftops about our "Cinco de Mayo Salsa Sale." It was a big success!
Post-relay, newly-hooked salsa fans kept knocking at the door. I agreed to continue making batches as long as the charitable aspect remained. We settled on "Salsa Mama" as the name and all of the other details fell into place. My son oldest drew his "vision" of the Salsa Mama (the same logo you see today), my dear friend Ann and her daughter designed the lettering, and our team captain and my friend Kristie helped with business cards and labels. We were off and running, or more specifically, stirring, chopping, and delivering!!
For many years, Salsa Mama continued as a "fundraising hobby," supporting a wide range of charitable organizations with a special emphasis on children's needs. It has been an enormously REWARDING to meet so many wonderful non-profit organizers and grateful families who have humbly accepted our help.
In 2019, Salsa Mama was getting more "grown up" and was ready to spread her wings and fly a little further into the wonderful world of the Lenexa (Kansas) Farmer's Market. Our whole family and some wonderful friends helped out to varying degrees with the salsa production, selling at the market booth, and getting to know the other vendors. Seriously, it doesn't get any better than being part of a farmer's market family. We are SO happy to be part of the mission!
Whether you have been part of this endeavor from the beginning or are just discovering it now, we are blessed that this delicious homemade product is allowing our paths to cross!
May you be showered with many blessings and much peace, and may you never run out of the gooooood salsa!!
